When we learned that World of Beer was looking for thre Drink It Interns for Summer 2016, we thought “who better than Vanessa?” Over a few beautiful beers, and much deliberation, our team quickly (and unanimously) agreed that she should apply. We also agreed there was NO WAY a 1-min audition video could capture the fiery, brazen broad and creative storyteller that Vanessa is. So, here are 5 reasons (among millions) why we’d love to see our very own as the next Drink It Intern for World of Beer. Cheers!
1. A lust for life requires nerves of steel, and she has both.
From the moment she could stand on her own two feet, Vanessa has been on the move. Hell, in the last 2 years she’s traveled to nearly a dozen other countries and road trips it locally every chance she gets. So where did this zeal come from? That answer is simple: La Familia.
A Central American expat, Vanessa’s roots lie in Myrtle Beach, SC, where her family owns and operates Surf City Surf Shop. Avid travelers and wave hunters, Vanessa’s folks certainly had a hand in establishing her long-standing love affair for “living life on the fringe.”
Today, Vanessa hangs her hat in Costa Rica, as an advanced diver, stand up paddleboard enthusiast, roller derby veteran, experienced hiker, and yoga enthusiast – whew! Exhausted yet? She’s certainly not. Pushing herself to the limit is just how she lives. Pitch Vanessa a ball and she’ll aim for the fences.
2. Vanessa has knocked glasses with NC’s craft beer ‘brewery boomers’.
For her college years, Vanessa traded in Myrtle Beach, SC for Wilmington, NC, where she attended UNC-W and earned a BA & Masters in English/Literature. This sleepy little Port City, rich in history (and hipsters) has even made the list on MainStreet.com as one of the drunkest cities in the country. Vanessa happened to arrive on the scene just as the NC craft beer market really took hold in the state.
Those days, she skated to the bars (ahem, Lula’s a Pub, Cape Fear Wine & Beer and Blue Post Billiards) as one of the Cape Fear Roller Girls. If you haven’t heard of ‘em, you better learn of ‘em – those girls rock bruises bigger than their hits. After the derby matches, there were always beer chugging and leg wrestling competitions, and Vanessa certainly held her own.
3. Digital marketer, wrangler of words – Vanessa is a virtual rockstar.
Hanging up her skates was no easy feat – but it had to be done to focus on her true passions: traveling the world and sharing her experiences. At Rica Web Design, Vanessa wears a multitude of hats. She is digital marketer, social media guru, creative copywriter, SEO specialist, and team motivator. We’re not just bragging, check out her credentials – they’ll blow you away.
4. A natural team player, strategy is her strong suit.
Vanessa’s ‘keen’ eye (pun intended) for sizing up the competition and rallying the right team to get the job done may have started in the rink, but now lights a fire for her web-based clientele. Over the years, she has honed her strategic skills into a finely developed online marketing force, wielded by furiously fast fingers and sharp intellect.
Not only is Vanessa easy to communicate with, working with her is a literal walk in the park. Searching for a self-starter with plenty of initiative and quick wit? Look no further. Vanessa is as resourceful and solution oriented as she is pleasant and pretty. Just don’t let her small stature and bright eyes fool ya – she’s been known to pack a punch!
5. Brimming with stories, she definitely has the ‘gift of gab’.
With all her travel and experiences, Vanessa has plenty of stories to tell…. Like the time her roller derby team skipped the ritual after party to assemble a “White Castle Man” from empty beer boxes and clothes found from a hotel pool. Or the classic “hold my beer” phrase she uses while cruising through police checkpoints in Central America. Or the time her steering wheel broke free from the car and she masterfully rode that baby for the next 10 miles on pure inertia and will of mind.
No need to embellish. The shit storm is always brewing overhead, and the narrative she weaves will make you pee your pants.
Basically, Vanessa is one-of-a-kind, and a stellar choice for World of Beer’s 2016 Drink It Intern. So what do you say, WOB? Make Vanessa Keen your Drink It Intern this summer, then hold on to your seats – it’s going to be a wild ride.
